Country Corner
I'm Shane McNeill, formerly known as "Shane K." on WXKI, 103.1 FM in Moulton, Alabama in the mid-1990s. Country music has certainly changed but that's what keeps it exciting.

I plan to keep you informed about the latest happenings on Nashville Star and some input about new music and new artists. As a photographer, I will be happy to share lots of pictures. New pictures are harder to come across these days due to restrictions barring cameras from venues. These restrictions are handed down by the management company and sometimes the venue. That'll be a another topic for us to take and maybe change the direction.

But, to get it all started, let's talk about Blake Shelton. His bass player broke his arm and is out of commission for about 6 weeks. A local Nashville bass player, Mark Ramsey, is filling his shoes while he recovers.

Reba McEntire celebrated birthday number 50 last night with about 300 friends. One guest included Gerry House, morning jockey on WSIX in Nashville, who also was celebrating his birthday - I think. Another guest at the party showed up at WSIX this morning for an interview. You might know her from judging Nashville Star this year: Anastasia Brown.

Anastasia says she's not trying to be Nashville Star's "Simon" but one does have to wonder. She, at least, is honest with her opinion. The problem I have is that it tends to be repetitive. If I hear, "You need to make me feel it," or "You're not connecting," one more time, I'll have to jump off this planet! But putting that aside, I think she is a constructive judge and I tend to agree with her on most things.

Phil Vassar is a really cool guy and I think he is making a good judge for the show. The same goes for Brett Michaels. Brett's image is contrary to everything else on Nashville Star but he is much more articulate than he looks and his opinion tends to be dead on what mine is.

But I haven't talked about the host yet, LeAnn Rimes. Now I have and nothing else needs to be said. Well, okay. LeAnn is actually doing a better job hosting than I would have imagined. Her music still isn't great and she's still not a 10 but at least she's going in the right direction.

Now let's talk about the contestants.

I'll just give a mention to Christy McDonald, Casey Simpson, and Josh Owen. They've all been sent home... and rightfully so.

Let me say that the competition is getting much tighter every week. I wouldn't have said it was a tight competition on the first episode at all. There were only about 2, maybe 3, contestants that stood out as even being good enough to qualify. All of the remaining contestants are doing a super job.

My favorites are Jenny Farrell, Jason Meadows, and Jayron Weaver. Tamika Tyler is very good but I have a hard time getting over the fact that she is already an acclaimed singer in Australia and she deserves a contract on her own. She has no business being on Nashville Star.

Erika Jo Heriges can perform well, she just failed to do so last week so I worry about her consistency. Jody Evans has a hillbilly rocker style which he performs very well. It's not necessarily my taste but I cannot deny the talent that he has and his delivery. He is doing a remarkable job. And then there is Justin David who royally screwed up the week before last by saying he hasn't given his "A" performance yet. That comment did not go well with the judges at all but, fortunately, the audience forgave him and kept him in the compeititon. He came back last week and gave the absolute best performance that has been shown on Nashville Star! In fact, I'm rooting for Jenny but Justin got my vote last week! Congrats Justin!

Let's watch tonight to see what happens. In the meantime, put in a CD and avoid the commercials!

- Shane K.
